La Fondazione Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea CDEC rappresenta in Italia il principale istituto di documentazione storica sull'ebraismo contemporaneo.

Il 25 aprile 1955, in occasione del decimo anniversario della Liberazione, la Federazione Giovanile Ebraica d’Italia (FGEI) costituì il Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea - Sezione Italiana. Se la data di fondazione segna il legame con la tendenza postbellica che porta alla fondazione di numerosi istituti storici indipendenti, dedicati alla valorizzazione della storia della Resistenza, la denominazione dimostra la volontà di porsi in continuità con le esperienze dei centri di documentazione ebraica che nel dopoguerra sorgono in diversi paesi (Centre de Documentation Juive Contemporaine di Parigi – oggi Mémorial de la Shoah – Lohamei Haghettaot e Yad Vashem in Israele). Nel suo primo Statuto, del 1957, lo scopo dichiarato del centro è "la ricerca e l'archiviazione di documenti di ogni tipo riguardanti le persecuzioni antisemite in Italia e il contributo ebraico alla Resistenza" e la loro divulgazione.

Il Centro di Documentazione, nella sua prima sede veneziana, nasce con il patrocinio dell’Unione delle Comunità Israelitiche Italiane, che assegna al Colonnello Massimo Adolfo Vitale, direttore del Comitato Ricerche Deportati Ebrei, l’incarico di suo rappresentante. L’enorme mole di documentazione sulla Shoah raccolta da Vitale e il materiale sulla partecipazione ebraica nella Resistenza raccolto dai giovani della FGEI rappresentano i primi due nuclei documentari su cui si costituisce l’attività del Centro.

Dal 1960, con la direzione di Guido Valabrega, il Centro assume i lineamenti che lo avvicinano alla sua fisionomia attuale: la gestione delle attività viene affidata a storici professionisti e la sua sede viene traferita a Milano.

Nel 1986, dopo vari ampliamenti, il CDEC si è costituito in Fondazione Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea – CDEC.

Oggi la Fondazione CDEC svolge in particolare attività di ricerca scientifica e divulgazione sulla storia degli ebrei in Italia in età contemporanea, sulla Shoah, sulla memoria e sulla didattica della Shoah in Italia, sull'antisemitismo e sul pregiudizio dal secondo dopoguerra ai giorni nostri. Lo studio e la conoscenza di questi temi vengono promossi attraverso un'ampia gamma di attività e iniziative, fra cui:

- Acquisizione e conservazione di documenti d'archivio, fotografie, pubblicazioni, materiali audiovisivi;
- Convegni, mostre, rassegne documentarie e cinematografiche;
- Seminari e corsi di aggiornamento, conferenze, iniziative di studio;
- Orientamento e consulenza a studiosi e istituzioni, nazionali e straniere;
- Pubblicazioni, realizzazione di mostre e documentari.

La Fondazione Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea - CDEC onlus è un istituto storico culturale indipendente e senza fini di lucro, con personalità giuridica, riconosciuto con DPR 17 aprile 1990, con sede a Milano. Per statuto, è soggetta alla vigilanza dell'Unione delle Comunità Ebraiche Italiane (art. 17) nonché del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali (art. 18).
Dal 1984 è inserita nella tabella degli istituti culturali di rilevante interesse nazionale sostenuti dal Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali e nel 1992 l'Archivio della Fondazione è stato dichiarato di "notevole interesse storico" dalla Soprintendenza per i Beni Archivistici della Lombardia.

The Jewish Contemporary Documentation Center (CDEC) Foundation is the major Italian institute for the history and the historical documentation on contemporary Italian Jewry.

On April 25th, 1955, tenth anniversary of the Liberation from fascist and nazist dictatorship, the Jewish Youth Federation of Italy (FGEI) establishes the Jewish Contemporary Documentation Center (CDEC).
While the symbolic date of foundation shows the postwar trend influence of the several indipendent institutes for the history of the Resistance, the name of the Center underlines the intent to connect to the experiences of the jewish documentation centers appearing in different countries after the war (among these: the Centre de Documentation Juive Contemporaine in Paris – today Mémorial de la Shoah – the Lohamei Haghettaot and the Yad Vashem in Israel). According to its first Statute, the Center’s goal was to seek, to collect and to divulge the documentation concearning the antisemitic persecutions occurred in Italy and the Jewish effort in the Resistance.

The Italian Documentation Center was born in Venice under the supervision of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, that appointed as its rappresentative Colonel Massimo Adolfo Vitale, previous director of the Comitat for the Research of Deported Jews. The enormus amount of Shoah documentation collected from Vitale, along with the material gathered from FGEI members, concearning jewish partecipation in the Resistance were the first two nucleus of the Center’s documentation and activity.

From 1960, under the direction of Guido Valabrega, the Center moved closer to its present features: the lead passed to professional historians and its location was tranferred to Milan.
In 1986, after several improvement, it becomes Jewish Contemporary Documentation Center (CDEC) Foundation.

Today CDEC Foundation focuses its activity on scientific research and divulgation on Italian Jewish contemporary history, on the Shoah, its memory and its didactics, on antisemitism and on prejudice from 1945 to present days. The study and the knowledge of these subjects are promotes through a wide range of iniciatives, such as:
- Acquisition and preservation of archival documents, pictures, publications and audiovisual materials;
- Conventions, exhibitions, documentary and cinematographic festivals;
- Seminars and refresher courses, conferences, study iniciatives;
- Guidance and advise for Italian and international scholars and institutions;
- Publications, exhibition development and documentaries.

The CDEC Foundation is included on the list of the major Italian cultural institutes supported by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and it is a non-profit organization.
All its historical, archival or bibliographic materials are preserved as an inalienable asset of Italian Jewry.
The current by-laws of the CDEC Foundation state that the Foundation is an independent Institute under the aegis of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) and that it is subjected to the surveillance by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and UCEI.
