Exploring the historical center of Genoa is fascinating. The city has been an independant republic from the 11th century upto the end of the 18th century. It participated at the first crusades, and had been trading throughout the entire Mediterranean Sea and far beyond since very early days. It invented the modern banking system in 1407 and gave the name the blue jeans.
