Frederick Stibbert nacque nel 1838 da padre inglese e madre italiana. Con la famiglia viveva nella villa di Montughi ma trascorse la sua gioventù a studiare in Inghilterra. Dopo aver ereditato la vasta fortuna del nonno, per tutta la vita si dedicò raccogliere oggetti da tutto il mondo. La villa e il parco contengono infatti migliaia di oggetti, distribuiti in 57 stanze, che variano dalle armature alle armi ai dipinti fino ai costumi. Stibbert ha donato la villa e tutti i suoi tesori al comune di Firenze nel 1906, l’anno della sua morte, ordinando che diventasse un museo pubblico. Il museo è aperto ufficialmente dal 1909 e rimane ancora oggi a testimonianza della sua passione per il collezionismo e del suo interesse per la storia del costume.

Frederick Stibbert was born in 1838 to an English father and Italian mother. He lived with his family in the Montughi Villa but spent his youth studying in England. After having inherited his grandfather's vast fortune, he spent his life collecting objects from all over the world. The villa and garden hold thousands of objects distributed in 57 rooms ranging from armor to weapons to paintings to costumes. Stibbert donated his villa and all his treasures to the city of Florence when he died in 1906 intending that it become a public museum. The museum officially opened in 1909 and remains still today a testament to his passion for collecting and to his interest in the history of costumes.
