Il Mare Libreria Internazionale has been founded in October 1975.

From then, the bookshop became a benchmark, a port of call for all those people who love sailing, racing, swimming, fishing, exploring the underwater world. The bookshop includes all kind of titles relating to the sea and its culture, such as history, gastronomy, folklore, and marine traditions. Fourty years of activity represent a piece of history. The International Bookshop Il Mare has promoted so many events that to mention them all would require an endless list. In any case it is sufficient to cite those of particular interest because they contributed to changing people’s mentality and establishing a new attitude towards the sea. In fact, the sea is no longer perceived as a space to be pillaged and plundered, but to be admired, protected and studied in order to understand its biological richness and diversity. The staff of Il Mare have always been ecologists, apart from any political implications.

Since then the bookshop has published more than ten catalogues and 35.000 articles on internet: a substantial number! Many important persons have visited Il Mare, such as Jacques Cousteau who was impressed by its’ atmosphere. Some came to talk about the sea, to present and sign copies of their own or other’s publications, to debate on such arguments as underwater photography and archaeology. Il Mare has become a publisher its own right. The first publication was “All’isola di Ponza” by Silverio Corsiveri, presented in ’85 by Jas Gawronski and Renato Nicolini. Other publications to be mentioned are the pilot-books designed by Roberto Neglia for the series “Andar per mare”.

In 1989 the bookshop transfered in the actual site. During the farewell party, Bernard Moitessier, the great French navigator, left an unforgettable souvenir: a drawing and a short tale in which he compares Il Mare to Ali Baba’s treasure cave.

The numerous activities of the Libreria il Mare such as book presentation, debates, meetings, navigation courses, etc. have brought together people quite different but linked by a common love: the sea. Hugo Pratt, Jacques Mayol, Luca Montezemolo, Vincenzo Zaccagnino, Predrag Matvejevic: just an example of the type of visitors to the shop. Each of them has given a contribution to improve the Libreria il Mare.

Thanks to the meticulous work of Marco Firrao, expert diver and skipper too, the bookshop has become a real emporium of the sea where one can find all kind of items: rare books, world nautical charts, wrist-computers, GPS, toys, paintings, sculptures, compasses, squares, pilot-books, posters, even ties, if connected with the sea.
