For more than 13 years there has been a partnership between Gonzaga University and Cagli, Italy. The Gonzaga-in-Cagli Project has sent more then 300 people to Cagli, and several Cagliese have been to Spokane over that time. In the Summer of 2013, the Mayor “Il Sindaco” (Alberto Allesandri) and his assistant (Marco Valeri) asked if after all this time it might be good to have a more formal Sister City agreement between our two cities and a group was formed in each location to explore feasibility. A Gonzaga University student, Shelley Hepler, wrote her Master’s thesis about the process of developing a Sister City agreement and met with the Cagli community members in this regard. Much work has been done since then, and now the two communities are in the process of finalizing their Sister City Agreement.

Da più di 13 anni esiste un rapporto stretto di collaborazione ed amicizia tra la città di Spokane (USA) e Cagli. Il programma “Gonzaga in Cagli” ha portato negli anni più di 300 studenti americani in quel di Cagli e diversi cagliesi hanno fatto il percorso inverso andando a visitrare Spokane. A fronte di ciò nell’estate 2013 il Sindaco di Cagli Alberto Alessandri e il capogruppo di maggioranza Marco Valeri hanno chiesto di ratificare ufficialmente con un gemellaggio questo rapporto speciale. Da subito c’è stato molto entusiasmo da entrambe le parti e si sono formate due “comunità”, una a Spokane ed una a Cagli, in cui si discutono le iniziative da intraprendere per creare interscambi culturali ed economici tra le due città. Tutto ciò è stato possibile anche grazie alla mediazione di Shelley Hepler che ha scritto una tesi di laurea proprio su questo gemellaggio. Molto lavoro è stato fatto, molto altro sarà da fare nei prossimi anni. Forse già entro l’anno dovrebbe avvenire la ratifica del gemellaggio che sancirà l’inizio di una “fratellanza” a lungo termine tra le città di Spokane e Cagli.

Why Cagli?

Cagli is a small jewel in the Appenine Mountains near the Adriatic Sea on the ancient Roman highway, the Via Flaminia, and offers a unique opportunity to explore authentic Italian life. Cagli has a rich history dating back well over 2,000 years. In the Region of le Marche, Cagli has a 1200’s Town Hall with a Renaissance façade, an opera school of prominence and mountains, waterfalls, bicycling and climbing. It has a classic, lively piazza and the region is known for its wonderful wines. Cagli was the birth place of artist Gaetano Lapis. Though its history is apparent throughout the town, Cagli boasts a rich modern social scene, summer concerts and festivals, and one of the region’s most beautiful theaters. The town also has a hospital, dentists, a gymnasium, grocery stores, and several outdoor caffès and restaurants. Cagli is home to over 15,000 citizens, most of whom live outside the main city center.

Why Spokane?

As the home of Gonzaga University, it was a logical progression to extend the relationship from the university to the community. In addition, Spokane has a vibrant Sister Cities Committee which has embraced the idea of a relationship with Cagli.
